Driver information system/ multifunction steering wheel
All Audi models feature a multitude of functions. Their displays and controls are bundled into two systems that are optional in some model series, standard in others. One is the Multi Media Interface (MMI) with a large central monitor; the other is the driver information system (DIS), which is controlled via the multifunction steering wheel.
The DIS is a fully-featured control center. Numerous functions are clearly visualized on its display between the dial instruments. In the header is the main menu bar with tabs for the individual sections. Important warnings and hints are also displayed here temporarily. Primary control takes place in the large field below the header. The status line at the bottom of the display shows such information as the time, the outside temperature and the odometer reading.
In most models, the DIS includes the onboard computer with efficiency program. It gives the driver tips for efficient driving, includes a gear-change indicator and shows how individual systems such as the rear window defroster affect fuel consumption.
The multifunction steering wheel also features cleverly engineered solutions. Buttons and press-and-turn roller controls are integrated into its spokes, and paddles augment the control fields. Operation of the multifunction steering wheel is simple and intuitive. This control concept is not reserved for the large models; it is also available as an option in the compact Audi A1 (Combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 7.1 – 3.8; Combined CO2-emissions in g/km: 162 - 99)**.
